"WHY" and "WE"
In any small farming operation, it is important to ask yourself "WHY" it is you do what you do. According to such mystics as Lynn Miller, "WHY" is the question to ask in any operation in which a person puts an extraneous effort to reap a benefit that is not immediate. So, WHY then, do I Molly Baker think farming is important, and how is that justifiable in a renaissance of young farming culture? Well, here is why:
I like cold on my face at 6 o' clock at night on a fall evening, the little pebbles and clay loam on my finger tips, freezing them. I like dirt. I like digging in it, and holding its structure. I like dirt way more than I like people. I think I even like dirt more than certain music. I like to play in the dirt in totally white clothes and learning that white clothes don't really tolerate dirt, I like learning things the hard way.
I like food, a lot. I like sucking on the outside of a strawberry in this very specific way so that the white part in the middle of it tastes more potent and fibrous. I like to play with different textures of food, in my mouth, worn on my face, in different concoctions, in different ways. I like to eat food. My grandmother, my mother, always cooking the best of meals. I want to cook and eat and give my kids food that is from our home. Just like my mom used to pretend she was an Italian, Mama Luigi! She would come to the table when pasta was cooked.
I also, love pigs, and goats, and bee's and horses, and cows and dogs and all of the natural world. I love animals. I love plants. I always have seen them with a hawk eye. I always pretended I was an animal or that I knew them really well.I also know a lot of plants and flowers very deeply. I love to look deeply into things, pick 'em apart with a finger nail.
I also love to play. I love to play outside and be outside and I also like to use my hands. Tie knots, mend myself with leaves and dirt. I love to make things by hand and feel the freedom to do so. I like to just make it all up as I go and do my best to mend, to build, to create.
I love all of the farmers in my life. I want to be them because they live in a simpler way. A way that I strive to find. There aren't any rules to anything in that world, you make them. You are participating. I wanna participate fully.
THESE ARE JUST A FEW REASONS WHY.
"WE"
marriage. WE= solidarity. A common understanding, a friend, a companion, an entity that you can put your energy into. WE. US. An important thing to not necessarily rely on, but a thing to help you. A buffer. A friend. An ear.
"WE" makes "WHY" work better.
I think.
